It seems like Twitter’s future is uncertain, but fear not, because Meta (formerly known as Facebook) is entering the fray and planning to launch a new microblogging platform this summer.
According to an email shared with a select group of creators and viewed by TechCrunch, the new Meta app will be text-based, stand-alone, and partially integrated within Instagram.
So, if you’re tired of managing multiple social media accounts, you’re in for a treat!
The new app will allow users to keep their Instagram verification and handle, and all of their followers will receive a notification to follow them on the new platform.
Additionally, the new platform will be decentralized and interoperable with Mastodon, which is built on the ActivityPub protocol. Because who doesn’t love interoperability, right?
Meta is eager to court high-profile public figures like athletes, actors, producers, showrunners, and comedians to give the new app an early boost.
In a note to these creators, Meta acknowledged that Mastodon, Bluesky, and other apps have had a head start in the race to build the next Twitter.
However, the company pointed out that it has the advantage of access to billions of users through its family of apps, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
Because clearly, we need more social media platforms to keep up with!
The new decentralized app is codenamed P92 or Barcelona, and it’s expected to be a standalonesocial network for sharing text updates.
Meta believes that there’s a need for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.
So, get ready to see more updates from your favorite celebrities, folks!
According to social media newsletter author Lia Haberman, the new Meta app will use the same community guidelines as Instagram, and users will be able to log in with their Instagram credentials.
Blocks and hidden words from Instagram will carry over, and safety features like two-factor authentication and spam reporting will be embedded from the beginning.
Moreover, users will be able to post text updates up to 500 characters long, as well as upload photos, links, and videos up to five minutes long.
So, get ready for some long-form content!
Social media consultant Matt Navarra also received the same information and shared it in a tweet earlier this month.
However, Meta declined to comment further when TechCrunch asked for more details, but did not dispute the leaked information’s accuracy.
So, it seems like the leaked information is correct, but we’ll have to wait and see when the new app is released.
Given that there are already so many social media platforms to choose from, some people might wonder if we really need another one.
However, the market is ripe for new Twitter alternatives, and Meta is hoping to capitalize on this trend.
That said, not every app that Meta has released in the past has been successful.
For instance, the company has sunsetted products like the anonymousteen app tbh, the Cameo-like app Super, the Nextdoor clone Neighborhoods, the couples app Tuned, the student-focused social network Campus, and the video dating service Sparked.
So, it remains to be seen whether the new Meta app will be a hit or a miss.
