IBM’s CEO, Arvind Krishna, recently revealed that the company plans to put a halt on hiring for positions that could be easily replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).
This means that those working in back-office functions, particularly human resources, may soon find themselves replaced by robots.
In fact, Krishna estimates that up to 30% of non-customer-facing jobs at IBM could be replaced by AI within the next five years, which could translate to around 7,800 employees getting the boot.
Mundane HR tasks like verifying employment and shifting employees between departments will be taken over by automation, while evaluating workforce productivity and composition will remain a human task for the next decade.
To make matters worse, IBM has already laid off over 3,900 employees due to missing its annual cash target.
However, the company continues to hire talent and added 7,000 people to its workforce in the first quarter of this year.
It seems like the rise of AI is causing many companies to cut costs in favor of technology, which ultimately puts people out of work.
It’s a tough pill to swallow, but as they say, you can’t spell “artificial intelligence” without “I” – and that’s exactly who’s getting replaced.
According to a report by Goldman Sachs, even more jobs could be at risk in the future, with AI potentially replacing 300 million full-time positions.
So, if you’re currently working a job that involves repetitive tasks, you might want to start brushing up on your robot-fighting skills.
