Google has surprised everyone with a logo redesign for Android, deviating from two major trends in logo design as well as Google’s own recent approach.
The new Android logo features a pointy uppercase A, a departure from the rounded design favored by Google.
The rebrand was handled by Huge, a creative agency founded by David Skokna, Sasha Kirovski, Gene Liebel and Aaron Shapiro in 1999.
The new Android logo moves away from the prevalent flat design trend by introducing a 3D representation of the robot head.
While Google has been applying its controversial logo redesigns to its app icons, resulting in a uniform look across all apps with the application of Google colors, the Android logo takes a different approach.
Although the new Android logo has only been seen in the brand’s YouTube advertisements and presentations so far, it is expected to roll out on boot screens with the release of Android 14 in a couple of months.
The logo combines a pointy uppercase A with rounded “n” and “r” characters, reminiscent of the design used from 2014 to 2019.

While app icons have followed the flat design trend, the Android robot has been transformed into a 3D representation.
This shift in design appears to communicate more than just a grammatical preference. It reflects Google’s vision for how it wants the mobile operating system to be perceived.
Typically, lowercase letters are associated with a brand’s approachability and friendliness, while uppercase letters convey a sense of authority and endurance.
Android seems to aim for a combination of both, featuring super-rounded letters with an imposing pointy A towering above them.
Surprisingly, this unconventional design works, presenting a mature yet modern and expressive brand image.
Alongside the updated Android logo with a prominent “A,” the robot head mark has also undergone a 3D redesign.
This change not only sets it apart from the abundance of flat designs but also opens up possibilities for the robot to assume different personalities for various applications.
At Google I/O 2023, Android was promoted as the world’s “most expressive OS,” with the robot dressed up in various designs, ranging from tires to a disco ball.
Initially thought to be a one-time occurrence, the new logo suggests that this versatility may become a regular feature, enabling Google to use different robot designs to represent various Android tools and features.
The shift to a 3D logo design may also be influenced by the anticipated rise of virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR).
Google’s collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm on an XR project has sparked speculation about a new Samsung VR headset featuring Google software, potentially offering a more affordable alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro.
