Football legend Jose Mourinho has sent his best wishes to Zimbabwean football giants Highlanders Football Club who are currently on a remarkable unbeaten run in the local Premier Soccer League.
Highlanders, affectionately known as ‘iBosso’ meaning ‘The Bulawayo Giants’, are currently unbeaten in 18 consecutive games – a terrific feat for any club. Their coach, Baltemar Brito, who is famous for overseeing the club’s dominance over cross-town rivals Dynamos in recent years, was Mourinho’s assistant coach at famed Portuguese side FC Porto from 2002 to 2004. During their time together at Porto, the club achieved tremendous success including winning the coveted UEFA Champions League in 2004.
Baltemar Brito was Mourinho’s assistant when ‘The Special One’ shocked the football world by winning the Champions League with Porto in 2004. Brito then followed Mourinho to Chelsea when the Portuguese manager took over the English giants in 2004, staying on as an assistant until 2007.
Wishing Highlanders the best in their next match, Jose Mourinho said: “I send my support and belief to the players and everyone involved with the club. I hope my friend Brito and the team can keep this positive momentum and achieve great success this season.”
Highlanders, who hail from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city, are known as ‘The Bulawayo Giants’ due to their incredible history, massive fanbase, and dominance of Zimbabwean football over the decades. They face Kariba FC in their next league game on Saturday and will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to 19 matches with Mourinho’s words of encouragement ringing in their ears.
The legendary manager’s well-wishes will no doubt provide Highlanders with a morale boost as they chase more glory for their loyal fans this season. As Baltemar Brito and the players look to keep their momentum going, all of Zimbabwe will be watching intently to see if the ‘Bulawayo Giants’ can finish 2018 on a high.
