Choreographer John Cole recently took to the TedX Borrowdale stage to share his story and inspirational message in his talk “Remember It’s Your Dance After All”.
Cole has made a name for himself in Zimbabwe’s dance and music scene, working with top artists like Jah Prayzah, Ammara Brown, and Winky D. Besides choreography, Cole is also a video director, creative director, songwriter and producer running the John Cole Group media company.
“I used to sell fruits and vegetables and work as a gardener to supplement my income before I became famous,” said John, “but today I’m here delivering a Ted talk,” he added.
Since then, he has fully immersed himself in the art of choreography and he has built an impressive resume.
“Some people when they see me today they say ‘Oh you were at St Georges right?’ and I tell them ‘nah I went to Morgan High School…’ so because of who I am today, that’s how people see me.”
In his TedX talk, Cole shared some motivational nuggets from his own journey to inspire others to passionately pursue their dreams.
“The future is very different for everyone. When you want to go to the front you’re gonna have to bump some people out of the way,” he stated, emphasizing the need to put yourself out there.
Cole encouraged the audience to be bold and daring in chasing dreams. “Be as dramatic as you can because no one else is gonna do it for you,” he urged. He emphasized the importance of thinking ahead, noting “If you don’t think about the future you’re gonna stay stagnant.”
The choreographer also highlighted the significance of believing in one’s abilities even when others do not. “I may not know how to do some things but I do know how to sell ice to an Eskimo,” he quipped.
Cole also advised the audience to take ownership of their paths and define success on their own terms. “Remember it’s your dance after all,” he emphasized.
“I am my biggest motivation, biggest competition and biggest critic,” Cole stated.
The choreographer encouraged young people to surround themselves with positive people who believe in their dreams. He also urged them to learn business skills to monetize their talents.
On challenges, Cole advised viewing them as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. “If plan A doesn’t work, remember there are 25 other letters in the alphabet,” he reminded.
Cole emphasized humility and gratitude on one’s journey to success. He highlighted the importance of helping others rise up too once you make it. “Stay grounded and authentic,” he advised.
The choreographer encouraged attendees to take a leap of faith towards their passions. He noted the world needed more risk-takers and creative thinkers. “Stop waiting for the perfect moment, start now,” Cole urged.
Cole received a standing ovation for his inspiring and motivational talk. His story of determination and resilience clearly resonated with the audience. The choreographer’s first Ted X talk marks another highlight in his blossoming career. With his sights set firmly on the future, one expects more outstanding choreography and creative vision from this rising dance talent.
