John Cole and Winky D in ‘Ghettocracy’: The Power of Melody and Movement

Posted on

On the last day of 2023, Zimbabwean music icon Winky D took to the stage at the famous Harare International Conference Centre for a highly anticipated New Year’s Eve performance.

Dubbed “Ghettocracy”, the sold-out concert not only celebrated two decades of the award-winning artist’s illustrious career, but also witnessed a creative collaboration that pushed boundaries in the Zimbabwean arts scene.

Renowned choreographer John Cole was tasked with bringing Winky D’s powerful lyrics and message to life through show-stopping dance routines.

What resulted was a visual spectacle like no other, with complex choreography that left the energetic crowd in awe.

The two giants joined forces to create an unforgettable multi-sensory experience – one that would bring Zimbabwean talent, culture and identity to the forefront on the international stage.

John Cole is known for pushing boundaries with his innovative choreography, but on New Year’s Eve, he outdid himself with a show-stopping performance that stole the headlines at the massive concert.

Decked out in alien-inspired costumes resembling the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Putty Patrollers, Cole led his troupe of talented dancers in mesmerizing routines that electrified the packed venue.

The electrifying synergy between these two gurus in their respective domains left fans awestruck, and social media buzzing with excitement.

The sold-out concert also brought together an all-star lineup featuring ZimDancehall stars like Tocky Vibes, Killer T and Bazooka alongside legendary musician ExQ and acclaimed rapper Bling 4.

John Cole’s collaboration with Winky d on the music video for “kaSong keJecha” had already hinted at the brilliance that awaited. However, it was during the live performance of “Ghettocracy” that the true magic unfolded.

Surpassing expectations, John Cole’s choreography took center stage, while Winky d himself joined in the dance, a rare feat for the Bigman.

This unprecedented collaboration showcased Winky d’s willingness to embrace new artistic elements, stepping outside his comfort zone to deliver an unforgettable experience for his adoring fans.

The seamless fusion of music and choreography created an immersive spectacle that left an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to witness it.

John Cole’s contributions to the Zimbabwean music industry cannot be overstated. For over a decade, John Cole has revolutionized dance in Zimbabwe through his innovative work.

Having choreographed for some of the biggest names in the country, including Amara Brown, Freeman, and Jah Prayzah, he has earned his reputation as a visionary.

Cole’s ability to infuse innovation, creativity, and storytelling into his work sets him apart as a true trailblazer.

In 2023, Cole made history as the first Zimbabwean choreographer to deliver a TEDx talk, cementing his status as an influential thought leader. His boundary-pushing choreography has lit up countless concerts and events nationwide.
