Sciency, a Zimbabwean startup dedicated to providing affordable access to practical STEM and Robotics Education in Africa, has achieved a remarkable feat by winning the prestigious Falling Walls Engage Competition. This global platform for Science Engagement, hosted by the Falling Walls Foundation in collaboration with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, recognizes and celebrates outstanding practitioners who engage audiences with science worldwide.
Sciency is on a mission to revolutionize STEM education in Africa, preparing learners for the future of work through low-cost access to practical STEM and Robotics Education. Founded by Nkosana Masuku, a Chemistry and Physics teacher and former Nelson Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni, Sciency aims to address the scarcity of STEM teaching resources prevalent in many African communities. Having experienced the frustrations firsthand while teaching at Lubhango Secondary School in the rural Matobo district of Matabeleland South, Masuku was inspired to create a platform that would bridge the educational gap and inspire young minds.

The Falling Walls Engage Competition, held annually in Berlin as part of the Falling Walls Science Summit, brings together science engagement practitioners from around the world. This event provides a unique opportunity for selected practitioners to gain international visibility, connect with other inspiring professionals, and share their innovative approaches to engaging audiences with science. By winning the Falling Walls Engage Competition, Sciency has not only showcased their groundbreaking work but also opened doors to collaboration and further exposure on a global scale.
Sciency’s Success
Sciency’s impact has already been felt, as demonstrated by the achievements of one of their Sciency Stem Club students, Joanette Ngwenya. Ngwenya presented her groundbreaking Sign Language Interpreter Project at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the United States and received the Project Excellence special award in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines category. This remarkable success story is just one of the many milestones that Sciency has achieved in its quest to provide quality STEM education to African learners. With each accomplishment, Sciency is gaining recognition and making a significant difference in the lives of students.
Sciency’s Future
Sciency’s long-term goal is to reach over 1 million learners, ensuring that quality STEM education is accessible to students across Africa. To date, they have already made a significant impact, reaching over 65,000 learners. By providing affordable access to practical STEM and Robotics Education, Sciency is equipping African learners with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the modern world.
