Many had assumed retro logos were a trend of the past. But some seminal brands are taking an unexpected trip down memory lane as they rebrand and rethink their visual identities.
Far from resting on past accomplishments, these innovators are finding inspiration in where they started to ignite excitement about where they’re heading.
Honda is the latest household name to hit reverse. Known the world over by its angled “H” badge, the automaker recently stunned onlookers with an unveiled update that harkens back over half a century.
Gone is the glossy, contoured mark of late, replaced instead by a familiar yet freshened take on the “H” design dating to 1961.
However, unlike other modern renditions, this iteration pays homage to the original 1961 design that first represented the brand. If you’re seeking design inspiration, take a moment to explore the best logos of all time.
Notably, the new ‘H’ mark no longer features a surrounding border.
Honda claims that the more sharply angled lines are meant to resemble a pair of “outstretched hands,” although this association may not be immediately apparent to everyone.
Honda has stated that this updated logo will exclusively accompany their next-generation EV models, symbolizing their commitment to advancing mobility and meeting the needs of Honda EV users.
The previous iteration of the ‘H’ mark has a rich history dating back to 1981 when it was revamped from its predecessor.
To commemorate the development of their next-generation EVs, Honda embarked on designing this new logo, reflecting their determination to surpass their origins and continuously pursue innovation and challenges.
The new logo will make its debut on the next-generation EVs, including the Honda 0 Series models. However, it will be some time before the logo hits the road, as the Series Zero Saloon model is scheduled for mass production in 2026.
Following the footsteps of recently updated logos such as Burger King, Burberry, and Pepsi, Honda’s refreshed mark exemplifies the cyclical nature of design. In 2024, the past finds new life once again.
