Elon Musk, the man who seems to have a knack for stirring up controversy and turning it into a marketing strategy, has once again pulled off a masterful move.
He’s managed to make people appreciate the blue verified check mark on Twitter more than they ever did before, thanks to his latest shenanigans.
It all started when Elon bought Twitter, a loss-making business, and decided to focus on making it profitable. Genius move, right?
And what better way to do this than to monetize verification? That’s right, he started charging $8 for the coveted blue check mark that tells the world you’re someone important.
Naturally, people were willing to pay for this privilege, because who wouldn’t want to feel important? But then, last week, Elon went and did something that shocked the Twitterverse.
He took away all Legacy verified accounts, causing a wave of outrage and fury to wash over the platform.
Most Legacy verification badge owners were mad at Elon, using the platform to denounce the billionaire’s moves.
Elon being the master of reverse psychology that he is, gifted some account owners with free badges, including author Stephen King, former footballer Gary Neville, tennis player Sir Andy Murray, actor Sir Ian McKellen and comedian Ricky Gervais. However, Stephen King was still mad at Elon, and the two have engaged in a hilarious Twitter feud.
Stephen King urged Elon to donate the $8 he gifted King to a charity supporting Ukraine. Elon fought back, mentioning that he had already donated a whopping $100 million to Ukraine, and asked Mr. King how much he had donated himself.
Oh, Elon, you sly devil, using reverse psychology to make us appreciate the blue check mark more than ever before. Who knew taking something away could make us want it even more? And who knew that Twitter could become such a lucrative business under the guidance of a billionaire genius?
So, if you’re feeling left out without that blue verified check mark on your Twitter profile, don’t worry, Elon’s got you covered.
Just be sure to make a big fuss and he might just gift you one. And who knows, you might even get to engage in a Twitter war with a famous author. It’s all in a day’s work on the Twitterverse, thanks to Elon Musk.
