Anthony Edwards “Antman” responds to Carmelo and Cam’ron in Brilliant New Adidas Ad

Posted on

In the world of sports marketing, timing and relevance are everything. Adidas has hit a slam dunk with their latest advertisement featuring Minnesota Timberwolves’ rising star, Anthony “Antman” Edwards. The ad is a clever and timely response to recent comments made by NBA veteran Carmelo Anthony and podcaster Cam’ron, following Edwards’ performance against Kevin Durant’s Phoenix Suns in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs. The narrative and execution of the ad not only highlight Edwards’ prowess but also his resilience and determination to rise above criticism.

The Context

The backstory begins with a heated playoff game where the Timberwolves faced off against the Suns. Anthony Edwards played a pivotal role in the Wolves’ victory, which included a memorable dunk over Kevin Durant. Post-game, Edwards’ behavior was scrutinized, especially a moment where he appeared to taunt Durant. NBA legend Carmelo Anthony and Cam’ron weighed in on the situation, suggesting that if they had been in Durant’s shoes, they would seek competitive revenge. This critique set the stage for Adidas’ masterfully crafted advertisement.

The Ad’s Setup

The commercial opens with a stark, empty basketball court, illuminated only by the overhead lights. Anthony Edwards stands alone, practicing his shots with unwavering focus. The silence is broken by the mechanical whirr of a receipt machine, situated courtside. Seated beside it is a man tasked with reading the receipts aloud to Edwards, each featuring tweets and comments criticizing the young star.

This is only the beginning.

The Receipts

As the receipts roll in, the man reads them aloud, each one a jab at Edwards’ capabilities and character.

  • “To me, he is an all-star but not a superstar yet.”

Edwards, without missing a beat, responds with, “Screw buddy,” before sinking another basket with precision. Each receipt read aloud is followed by Edwards making a flawless shot, symbolizing his ability to convert criticism into motivation and success.

The Climax

The ad builds to a climax as the receipts flow faster, each one more biting than the last. Yet, Edwards remains unshaken, his performance on the court impeccable. The culmination of the ad is a powerful moment that harkens back to his iconic dunk over Durant. As Edwards takes flight for the dunk, he declares:

“This is only the beginning. ‘Cause I’m not who they think I am. I’m better. Believe That.”

The camera captures the dunk, emphasizing the sheer athleticism and determination in Edwards’ eyes.

The Message

Adidas’ advertisement is a masterclass in narrative and timing. By directly addressing the criticisms and controversy surrounding Edwards, the ad not only reinforces his image as a resilient and rising star but also aligns with Adidas’ brand ethos of overcoming obstacles and defying expectations. The ad effectively turns negative commentary into a source of strength and motivation, showcasing Edwards as a player who thrives under pressure and uses criticism as fuel for his fire.
