Elon Musk, along with his artificial intelligence startup xAI, has unveiled “Grok,” an AI chatbot that claims to outperform OpenAI’s initial version of ChatGPT in various academic tests.
In a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on November 5, Musk and the xAI team explained their motivation behind creating Grok: to develop AI tools that can assist humanity by empowering research and innovation.
They highlighted Grok’s unique advantage of having real-time knowledge of the world through the X platform.
Grok is not just an ordinary chatbot; it possesses a touch of humor and a rebellious streak, designed to answer questions with wit. Musk and xAI cautioned that individuals who despise humor should refrain from using Grok.
The underlying engine behind Grok, called Grok-1, underwent evaluation in several academic tests involving mathematics and coding.
The data shared by xAI revealed that Grok-1 outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 in all the tests conducted. However, it did not surpass OpenAI’s most advanced version, GPT-4, in any of the tests.
Musk and xAI acknowledged that models trained with significantly larger amounts of data and computational resources, such as GPT-4, surpassed Grok-1. Nevertheless, they emphasized the rapid progress xAI is making in training Language Learning Models (LLMs) with exceptional efficiency.
Currently, Grok is available to a limited number of users in the United States and can be accessed through X Premium Plus at a subscription price of $16 per month.
xAI clarified that Grok is still in its early beta stage and will continue to improve rapidly on a weekly basis. The xAI team also plans to implement additional safety measures to prevent malicious use of Grok.
xAI expressed its firm belief in the potential of AI to contribute significant scientific and economic value to society and emphasized its commitment to developing reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious AI use. They aim to ensure that AI remains a force for good.
Grok’s launch marks the culmination of eight months of work since Musk founded xAI in March. With Grok, xAI endeavors to provide a powerful AI tool that can assist researchers, innovators, and individuals seeking answers with a touch of humor and rebelliousness, while upholding the principles of responsible and beneficial AI development.
